Modern, intelligent products require mechanics, electronics, and software to work together seamlessly. Digital engineering connects these disciplines throughout the entire development process, providing the foundation for making sound engineering decisions at every stage. In this context, simulation is evolving from an analysis tool into a decision engine for product development. Drawing on current developments, this article explores what this means for day-to-day engineering practice.

#### **Summary**

- Digital engineering connects mechanics, electronics and software, creating a common foundation for informed engineering decisions.
- Structured data, models and processes, combined with AI and automation, make complex engineering workflows more efficient and accessible.
- Simulation is evolving from an analysis tool into a decision engine, while engineering expertise remains essential for validating results.

## Ansys and Synopsys Merger: What It Means for Engineering Teams

The merger of Ansys and Synopsys brings together two areas of expertise. Synopsys contributes its knowledge of electronics and chip design as well as the automation of complex development processes. Ansys complements this with high-end simulation of complex physics and complete systems, along with the ability to conduct virtual testing of intelligent products, including software.

For engineering departments, our customers, and users, this is an important step toward a holistic approach to modern, intelligent systems. The requirements Synopsys brings from the perspective of electronics and chip design reinforce precisely this development, because accurately representing all disciplines and their interactions, as well as enabling comprehensive automation, are crucial.

## Structure as the Foundation for Digitalization

As product complexity increases, a clear structure becomes increasingly important to ensure that development remains reliable, traceable, and efficient. And that is precisely what digitalization is about: creating structures and harnessing synergies. This requires structured data, structured processes, and structured models.

This is where current developments in digital engineering come into play. Tools such as the Systems Architecture Modeler (SAM) help make system relationships transparent and enable teams to model them collaboratively. Granta enables material knowledge to be captured across the enterprise and provided in a managed environment. Platforms such as Omniverse provide the foundation for connecting digital twins with high-fidelity simulation and making them available across company boundaries.

What these technologies have in common is their ability to make complexity manageable through structure. Only on this basis can synergies emerge between disciplines, data sources, and development processes.

#### Digital Engineering in Practice

## Making Automation and AI Accessible to Engineers

Terms such as artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and digital twins currently dominate many discussions. For engineers, however, what matters is not the terminology itself but the tangible benefits in their day-to-day work.

For example, the significant expansion of GPU acceleration is a major step forward. Users benefit from substantially shorter computation times, allowing them to make more informed decisions in less time. For companies, this means shorter development cycles and faster innovation. In addition, tools such as SimAI Pro make AI tangible and accessible for a wide range of engineering tasks. PyAnsys enables Ansys technologies to be automated through Python interfaces and integrated into existing development processes.

This allows companies to standardize recurring simulation tasks and efficiently implement complex workflows, enabling even non-simulation experts to use the results as a basis for decision-making. These developments should not be viewed in isolation. They logically complement one another and form the foundation for the transition toward AI-assisted development processes.

## Technology Alone Is Not Enough

Despite all the technological advances, tangible benefits remain closely linked to engineers' technical expertise. Digitalization does not only increase the demands placed on structures. The requirements for users themselves are also changing. AI-assisted automation generates enormous amounts of information and results. Technical expertise and experience are essential to derive reliable decisions from them. This is why companies are looking for expert support to help them ask the right questions, establish suitable workflows, and meaningfully integrate simulation into their development processes.

The introduction of new technologies should therefore be understood as an integration project. Working with a partner who brings the necessary background and experience makes it possible to define company-specific objectives and the integration roadmap required to achieve them. The starting point is an analysis of the current situation: Where are we today? Where are the gaps? Where do we ideally want to be? These questions lead to a concrete solution concept with clearly defined objectives, measurable results, and an actionable integration plan.

> The crucial skill for the future is asking the right questions and validating the results.

## Digital Engineering as a Strategic Imperative

The successful use of simulation today goes far beyond individual physical disciplines. The focus is on the bigger picture. This means looking at complete systems, including their requirements, objectives, and gaps. The appropriate tools and methods must then be selected to address them.

Digital engineering therefore operates on several levels at the same time. On the one hand, engineers need to work more efficiently and obtain reliable results. On the other hand, organizations need to establish structures that support this way of working. Ultimately, the objective is always to deliver tangible business value. The business case remains the key driver behind all transformation and integration projects.

## From Simulation to a Decision Engine

Looking back, one thing is clear: it has always been about competitiveness. Better products need to be brought to market at an appropriate price. This requires new approaches to increasing efficiency and reducing development costs. That has always been the decisive driver, and simulation is increasingly taking on a new role in this context.

Rather than serving solely as an analysis tool, simulation is increasingly evolving into a decision engine within the development process. Combined with AI, it gives broader groups of users access to simulation methods that support decision-making throughout the entire product development process.

The more automation and AI become integrated into engineering processes, the more important technical expertise becomes. For engineers, this is a positive development. The crucial skill for the future will not be finding answers, but asking the right questions and validating the results that are generated.
